How to use free trials without getting charged
Most surprise charges come from just three things: forgetting the end date, cancelling in the wrong place, or not knowing the fine print. Here's how to avoid all three.
1. Write down the exact end date the moment you sign up
Checkout pages almost always show the date your first charge happens. Screenshot it and set a phone reminder for the day before. Some services (Apple, Strava, Everand) say you need to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
2. Cancel where you signed up
If you started a trial in the iPhone or Android app, the subscription is usually billed by Apple or Google, and deleting the app doesn't cancel it. See how to cancel through Apple, Google Play and Amazon.
3. Know whether cancelling ends the trial immediately
Some services let you cancel on day one and keep the full trial: YouTube TV, Kindle+ (formerly Kindle Unlimited) and Apple's services, for example. Others end your access the moment you cancel, like Fubo, Everand and DoorDash DashPass. With those, cancel right after you've finished using it.
4. Watch for trials that turn into a yearly charge
Surfshark, Skillshare and Instacart+ can convert straight into an annual plan. That bill is much bigger than one month if you forget.
5. Use refund windows as a backup
A few services give refunds after the trial ends. Adobe Creative Cloud Pro gives a full refund within 14 days of the first charge, NordVPN and Surfshark have 30-day money-back guarantees, and Amazon refunds Prime if you haven't used any benefits during the paid period. You usually have to ask for the refund yourself.
6. Read “free meals” carefully
Meal kits like HelloFresh offer a discount on the first box, not a free trial, and the next box ships automatically unless you skip or cancel before the weekly cutoff.
